Professor Thomas Reid; Moral Philosophy DepartmentThe sitter (1710-1796) succeeded Adam Smith as professor of Morasl Philosophy at the University of Glasgow in 1764. One of the leading philosophers of his generation, Reid was a champion of the 'common sense' school of Scottish Philosophers, believing that intuition played an important role in the way people perceive the world. This portrait is probably posthumous.
