Description

Etching plate for "Nut-Shop, St James's Place"; This is a copper etching plate. St Jamess Place is in Hounsditch, in the East End of London. Whistler was fond of spending time in the less well-off areas of the city where he made images that celebrated the energy and character of the lifestyle there, rather than the poverty many of the people endured. The subjects of shopfronts and streetscapes were favourites with Whistler and allowed the artist ample opportunity to experiment with compositional devices, as well as the contrast of light and shadow in windows and open doorways. Birnie Philip Gift, 1935, not lendable. Inscription: s. in plate with butterfly; c.r.
