About Us

This project is a result of a unique partnership between the National Library of Scotland, The Hunterian, the University of Glasgow, and Glasgow Museums in order to redevelop one of Glasgow’s most iconic buildings, Kelvin Hall as a shared collections storage facility with public access, research and teaching space and Glasgow Club sports facilities operated by Glasgow Sport.

The Open Collections web site provides online access to collections held at Kelvin Hall and at other sites around the city.

At present the site contains all of the moving image collection from the National Library of Scotland’s Moving Image Archive, the majority of the collections from The Hunterian and the main collections to be housed at Kelvin Hall from Glasgow Museums. New items are automatically added and existing records updated on a regular basis.

The project uses a MySQL database, Apache Solr search platform and WordPress. The OAI PMH metadata harvesting standard is used to collect and update records from the partner’s collections management systems. A customised metadata schema based on Dublin Core is used to structure the data.
